The Fukuoka City Archive collects and preserves official documents of the City of Fukuoka of historic and cultural value as well as ancient, historical documents and materials related to the local Fukuoka area. Such material is made available for public viewing. The Archive, while serving as the “City of Fukuoka’s Material Preservation Center”, also collects literary material associated with the city to promote the culture of Fukuoka to present and future generations.

Official papers and documents of historical and cultural value are placed under collection. Such material and documents are thoroughly checked for their legal status with originals placed under preservation and copies made into microfilm.

Publications, pamphlets, leaflets issued by the City of Fukuoka are collected, preserved and made accessible to the public.

Original minutes of City Assembly proceedings of the City of Fukuoka from the Meiji Era are preserved and saved on microfilm. Copies are made available for public access.

Local material on a wide variety of subject area are collected, sorted and preserved and their public access made available. Such include material on the feudal fiefdom of Chikuzen, Fukuoka Prefecture centered on the City of Fukuoka, as well as historical journals of Yamaguchi Prefecture and prefectures of Kyushu.

Preservation: Special care is taken with regard to making appropriate classification of the material which may be subject to fumigation. Material prior to the Meiji Era is photographed on microfilm and copies are made for public access.

Reading Access: Material is placed on the shelves within the Special and Local Materials Room. Reading access is provided to the public by way of microfilm and copies.

Local material on Fukuoka from ancient times to the present are collected, sorted and preserved and their access made available to the public. These include material on shrines, temples, private housing, businesses, enterprises, undertakings and individuals with important civil service records associated with the City of Fukuoka (such as mayors and city council chairpersons).

Collection material is fumigated, then thoroughly researched and when necessary, mended, fixed and repaired after which the material is microfilmed and included in the search catalog.

Access: Access to such material is fundamentally provided in the form of microfilm.

In addition to collecting, sorting and preserving material with ties to literary writers and authors from Fukuoka, the Fukuoka City Museum of Literature organizes undertakings such as planned exhibitions and literary courses to provide residents of the City of Fukuoka with life long literary learning activities.
